Mt. Desert: Beatrix Farrand’s Garland Farm

Garland Farm, located on Mount Desert Island in Maine, is the last home and garden of the renowned landscape architect Beatrix Farrand (1872-1959). One of America’s most celebrated landscape architects, One of the charter members of the American Society of Landscape Architects, Farrand was well known for designing many of Maine’s distinguished private gardens, as well as consulting on some of the country’s most prestigious universities and colleges. Some of her landscapes include Dumbarton Oaks, Eolia (now Harkness Memorial State Park), and the old campus at Princeton University.

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the gardens at Garland Farm are divided into rectangular parterres. The central area outside the study consists of heaths, heathers, and lavender.

Visiting

Open for tours by appointment only from May through October. Tours can be designed around special interests, such as garden design, horticulture, biography, history, and other topics. For individual visitors, one week’s notice is required, but for groups up to 40 people, one month’s notice is required. All appointments need to be reconfirmed one day prior to the scheduled date.
